I Heard It Through The Grapevine - The Miracles

One important characteristic of Motown records is the disconnect between songwriter and performer. It was common for several artists to record the same song. “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” written by Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield, became one of Motown's most important tracks. This version, recorded by the Miracles, is included because they were the first to record the song. Ultimately, however, this version was deemed unreleasable.

You Really Got A Hold On Me - The Miracles

This classic track is one of the most popular and well-known of the early Motown tracks. While it features the classic Motown sound, this song – covered by numerous groups, both national and international alike - also reflects the vast influence that the Motown sound and label had on popular music in general. The most notable of these covers is the Beatles' version, recorded in 1963, though Cher and The Temptations also released their own versions.
