I Want You Back - The Jackson 5

I've selected this song as another example of a widely popular song from an influential Motown band. The Jackson 5 propelled to popularity with this track, their first single. They continued their success throughout the early 70's. The band, along with many other Motown groups, became one of the first African-American groups to reach the same levels of success and fan adoration as white groups. In this way, the Motown label helped popularize and accentuate black artists in ways that did not occur prior to many groups' success on the label.

This song, written by Smokey Robinson of The Miracles, was recorded by almost every major Motown during the 60's. This version by the Jackson 5 is the most well-known version, and reached number one as the B-side to “I Want You Back.” Eleven-year-old Micheal Jackson's lead vocal is absolutely breathtaking, and is supported by background vocals from his brothers.

I'll Be There - The Jackson Five

Another ballad – one that came after three upbeat singles by the Jackson 5, thus diversifying and expanding both the group's sound and potential. This single was to be the Jackson 5's greatest all-time selling single, proving yet again the vast popularity that African-American groups could achieve.
